Improved Wings
In the 4 years SimplePlanes has existed, wings have stayed the same. Now that every other part has been improved, here’s some ideas for wings:
1- More realistic appearance. There are no rectangular airfoils in real life. Low-poly representations of the the current three airfoil options would be a vast improvement over the current wing shape.
2- More adjustability. The current wings’ thickness cannot be adjusted, making them disproportionately small with large builds. The player should have the option to adjust the thickness at the root and the tip. In addition, the ability to adjust wing sweep at multiple points instead of the entire wing at once would be a great help and cut down on parts counts.
3- Better connection points and more rigidity. SP wings are subject to unrealistic amounts of wing flex and also to aeroelastic flutter because the connection points aren’t secure enough. Perhaps wings could use a similar connection mechanism as fuselage blocks, or connect at multiple points?
4- More control surfaces. Currently SP only supports ailerons, elevators, and rudders, and flaps are only possible with XML modding. For added realism, the player should have the option to add simple flaps and slats. More complex options (slotted flaps, Krueger flaps, split flaps) would open a lot of doors for builders.
Most of these options have been in demand for quite some time, and currently wings are holding back SP’s potential.
